Boulder Junction Town Board mulls multiple budget options

In an apparent first, the Boulder Junction Town Board debated during a special meeting on Wednesday, Oct. 4, giving town electors two budget proposals to choose from at their next meeting in November.

At issue in the upcoming budget for Boulder Junction officials is $5 million in levy-based funding for area road projects.

According to Boulder Junction clerk-treasurer Kendra Moraczewski, this fee increase and the extra time required of the board if it is not approved necessitated the dueling options.

"Last year, if you'll all remember, when it didn't go through, we were here till midnight trying to trim the numbers to get taxpayers to vote on it," Moraczewski said. "So, it's just my opinion, but we should create two budgets. One with the $5 million and one without it."

The town supervisors expressed concerns about this direction.

Chairman Dennis Reuss wondered whether Boulder Junction could legally put two options forward and called for the area to get into contact with their attorney from the Wisconsin Towns Association for proper guidance.

"We're gonna have to call him because how do we structure this?" Reuss asked. "We have to vote first on the levy because roads are a major item."

Ultimately - and before going on to other budgetary matters - the town board agreed to check with its legal counsel before doing anything.

"We've got to be prepared for all options," supervisor Wesley Johnson said. "Let's check with the WTA and make sure we get it right."
