James E. Haber

James (Jim) E. Haber, 84, of Arbor Vitae passed away on Thursday, April 17.

Jim was born Feb. 27, 1930 in Greenville, Ohio, son of the late Ralph and Mable (Force) Haber. He attended high school in Englewood, Ohio, where he was a standout athlete in basketball and track. After graduating Jim was drafted into the U.S. Army. He was stationed in Germany during the Korean War, serving as a medic. After completing service to his country, Jim attended Miami University in Oxford, Ohio, where he majored in Botany. Jim met Janet Franklin while at Miami University and they were married on July 2, 1955, in Milwaukee.

Jim worked in retail management throughout the Midwest where he was employed by Montgomery Ward, Topps Discount and Lee Wards until both he and Janet retired and moved to Papoose Lake in Manitowish Waters in 1985. There they met many friends.

Jim and Janet enjoyed years of walking, biking, canoeing, and cross country skiing together in the North Woods. Together they built a cedar strip canoe and were both talented stained glass artists. They looked forward to family visits and meeting their friends on Friday mornings for coffee. Jim enjoyed fishing with his family and with his friends Hank and Howard. He was a loving and proud husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, friend and neighbor.

Jim flew to Washington DC in September 2013 on a Never Forgotten Honor Flight, an event he never tired of talking about.

Jim is survived by his wife of 59 years, Janet; a son, Eric J. (Rhonda) Haber of Iron Mountain, Mich., a daughter, Gretchen M. Haber, of Elgin, Ill., grandchildren David (Heather) Malecek, Christopher (Lisa Kamppinen) and Zachary Haber, step grandchildren Collin and Rachelle Wangerin, great grandchildren Oliver and Josephine Malecek, and a true lifelong friend, Herb Fulger of Cleveland, Ohio.

A private memorial will be held on April 28. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the American Diabetes Association, PO Box 1834, Merrifield, VA 22116-8034, or to the Wausau Chapter of the Never Forgotten Honor Flights, PO Box 5056, Wausau, WI 54402-5056.
