Licia Kuckkahn Johnson was recently awarded the Non-Formal Educator of the Year Award from the Wisconsin Association for Environmental Education.
For the last 12 years at the North Lakeland Discovery Center, Licia Kuckkahn Johnson has worked to educate young and old about the natural resources of northern Wisconsin. Her dedication to her work, and to the NLDC has earned her the honor of Non-Formal Educator of the Year from the Wisconsin Association for Environmental Education. (subscriber access)

Mercer School Senior Class Ice Fishing Tournament is a success

The Mercer School senior class hosted its second annual Mercer School Senior Class Ice Fishing Tournament Jan. 12 on the Turtle Flambeau Flowage.

Contestants competed in four different categories – walleye, northern, crappie and perch – and had youth (10 and younger) and adult divisions.

The Bullions of Hazelhurst have been ice fishing for decades. Kieth Bullion said his love for ice fishing was spawned by a move to the Northwoods.

“We moved up here in 1963. We bought the Log Cabin Inn – a resort on Garth Lake,” Kieth recalled. “It became a tradition –­ ice fishing. Well, fishing in general – fishing and hunting.”

Opening day of gun season is a special time in the Northwoods for those that take to the deer woods. For 11-year-old hunter Brock Walkowski of Eagle River, the special day would end early and end well. He would put a tag on his first deer.

Local bird watchers conducted the 48th annual Fifield-Park Falls Audubon Christmas Bird Count (CBC) Dec. 15, counting all birds seen or heard within a 15-mile diameter circle centered on the Fifield Post Office.
