Curtis falls in first sectional match

The Lakeland Union High School girls' tennis season officially came to an end on Wednesday at the WIAA Division 2 Sectional Tournament at Baldwin-Woodville High School.

Riley Curtis was the lone Thunderbird to compete in the tournament and the senior was ousted in her first match of the day.

Lakeland's top player fell to Trista Haan of Osceola in a tough match, 3-6, 3-6, in first singles competition.

"She played well in her match," LUHS head coach Tom Oestreich said. "All of the girls are good at sectionals so the girl that she played - it was a competitive match, but (Haan) was just slightly better than her, which gave her the edge. Riley played well so I'm proud of how she played and the way she ended the season."

Curtis and Haan were similar players and the latter eventually placed fourth overall at sectionals.

Haan was simply able to dictate the play during the match, which gave her the advantage.

"They both had very similar games, but (Haan) was just able to dictate a few more of the points and move Riley around," Oestreich said. "It kind of went back and forth. Riley was up in the first set when she was moving Haan around, but she was able to move Riley around a little more and dictate some of the points."

The loss not only ends the season for Lakeland, but it was also the last match in the high school career of Curtis.

Curtis finishes the season 11-14 overall and it was the second consecutive season she had reached sectionals.

"Riley was the backbone of our team," Oestreich said. "She just worked really hard. Oftentimes she would help set up practice, stay late after practice to work on her game. She's just a great overall tennis player."
